Psychedelics Research

Historically, Albert Hofmann's discovery of LSD in Basel in the 1950s initiated intensive research into these substances. But psychedelic research was stopped abruptly in the 1970s after Nixon ratified the Convention on the Control of Psychotropic Substances, which prohibited their use for therapy and research. Prohibition resulted in suppressed publication rates for psychedelic research for decades

However, since the beginning of the new millennium, we are living in the midst of what could be called a "psychedelic renaissance". There has been a revival of scientific interest in psychedelic compounds such as LSD or psilocybin led by organization such as the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), the Beckley Foundation, etc. Clinical trials demonstrating the potential for larger-dose psychedelics in contexts of treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders have been conducted in high quality peer-reviewed journals

Psychedelic Research Lab in Switzerland

Research in Switzerland

The development of the psychedelic field is rapid, and Switzerland's place on the international scene is exceptional. Indeed, there are five research laboratories in Switzerland specifically dedicated to psychedelics, respectively at the universities of Zurich, Basel, Geneva (HUG), Fribourg and Bern.

To develop and improve psychedelic assisted therapy, and to understand these compounds, research is essential. Therefore, you will find below a list of ongoing studies in Switzerland that are seeking participants. There are different types of studies, including online questionnaires and clinical trials. You will also find international survey.

  • ~ Aliveness Task ~

    [Online Questionnaire]

We, the ‘Psychedelic Research & Therapy Development’ group at the University of Zurich, designed a novel behavioral task paradigm with which we want to measure the felt sense of aliveness that you experience when seeing objects, people, plants, animals, or landscapes.

  • ~ Use Motives of Substances ~

[Online Questionnaire available in different languages]

The primary objective of this study program is to assess the reasons for psilocybin (hallucinogenic mushrooms), LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) and MDMA (ecstasy) in adults who have used these substances at least once in the past 12 months.

  • ~Effects of LSD on Neuroplasticity in Healthy Subjects~

[On-site study in Fribourg, German speaking only]

The University of Fribourg wants to know if LSD affects neuroplasticity in healthy subjects. We are seeking German-speaking volunteers who have used psychedelics less than 10 times and are able to come to Fribourg for 8 study appointments.

  • ~Self-experimentation among psychedelic researchers, facilitators and clinicians}

    [Online Questionnaire] [Prism lab]

The aim of this online survey study is to evaluate the prevalence of self-experimentation with psychedelics among psychedelic researchers, clinicians and facilitators. Additionally we will look at how individual differences in prior experience with using psychedelics affect one’s attitudes and beliefs about psychedelics and evaluate whether, and to what extent, self-experimentation may lead to biases in their work.

Participant must professionally work with psychedelics (e.g psychedelic researcher, psychedelic assisted psychotherapist, psychedelic facilitator/trip-sitter)

Questionnaire to be done on PC, not phone

  • ~Psilocybin mushrooms online research study~

    [Online Questionnaire] [CIIS]

    (1) Have you had two or more experiences with psilocybin or “magic mushrooms” that produced moderate to strong psychoactive effects (in other words, not micro-doses)?

    (2) Have you had at least one highly meaningful experience with psilocybin or “magic mushrooms” that was not in combination with other substances?

    (3) Are you 18 or older and fluent in English?

If you answered with “yes” to all of the questions above, you are eligible to participate in an online survey study exploring the relationship between experiences with psilocybin mushrooms and various aspects of set, setting, and integration. Participation in this study will be completely anonymous and voluntary
